In a conversation with Gubba Kiran, CEO, Gubba Cold Storage Ltd.

Going back to the early days, what was Gubba Cold Storage’s initial business?

1879 before the Independence Era our great grand fathers have started the business of trading  Agriculture commodities  like Tamarind, Red chillies, Rice etc.,  This paved us the way to set up the first private sector cold storage in Andhra Pradesh way back in 1987. Our Managing Director Gubba Nagender Rao was instrumental in setting up this much needed standardalone single commodity big cold storage facility with a capacity of 500 tons. In 1998 , Gubba has innovated for India’s first commercial dehumidified cold storage for seeds and since then Gubba grown with the Indian seed Industry and were catalyst to the growth of 15,000 crores of Indian seed Industry.

Which industry sectors are your customers in?

Gubba Cold Storage provides preservation of perishables by providing controlled climatic conditions with temperatures ranging from Minus 25 to Plus 25 Degree C and Relative Humidity from 35 to 95% which caters products like Seeds, Pharmaceuticals, Frozen food, Dairy , agricultural commodities like fruits and Vegetables and processed food.

How do you sum up your proposition for customers in offering cold storage services in India?

Preservation services for perishables with an ultimate integrity in maintaining the parameters of preservation( Temperature & Relative Humidity). High standards of safety, systems and processes for ensuring product safety.

What other new projects have you got under way?

We have just commenced operations of our first cold storage beyond the  State of Telangana in Aurangabad. This 7000 tons multi product cold storage facility serves the Pharma, Frozen food and Seed industries. Strategically located at Shendra, MIDC, Aurangabad.  Our 16th Cold Storage facility, State of the Art facility for seeds is under construction and would buckle to operations by August 2016.  Expansion plans in the other states of the country is in the pipeline.

You’re growing quickly at the moment. How much more capacity have you to take on more cold storage projects and work?

We have plans for expansion and grow volumes in Pharma, Frozen, seeds, Food and Vegetables sectors across India. By December 2016, the plan would be rolled out.

Gubba Group has achieved pretty impressive achievements and won industry awards. Could you please share some achievements?

Indian cold storage industry have recognized for our contribution to the Industry since few years with theDanfoss Ice Award 2013, Hans India Award 2013, Emerson Cup award for Best Refrigeration Design in the country, Cold Chain IndustryAwards-2015 and 2016 for Best in class service and Innovation of the year respectively.

How big are Gubba Group as a business in India? 

We are one of the largest cold storage companies in terms of volume with a capacity of 1,20,000 tons and we handle 2000 tons of product each day. Limca has also recognized Gubba as the Biggest Cold Storage company for the year 2014. However, we believe our Bigness lies in Serving the trust of our 300 clientele list.

How do you compare with other specialist Cold Storage companies?

Probably we belong to that 1% of the structured cold storage industry in India. Gubba Cold Storage has carved a niche in the cold storage industry sector. Every plant it has erected has been committed with Innovation, Best of Technology , Processes and Systems. Hence, we could deliver India the first Dehumidified cold storage in 1998, 1st world class rack cold storage which handles 2 ton jumbo bags, block stacking cold storage system and the 1st private sector Germplasm Bank that preserves genetic material for up to 40 years.

Do you publish customer case studies?

We do not publish customer case studies. But, we do publish newsletters for the seed and frozen food industries. They contain the news about the industry for the industry men with popular readership. They are called Gubba Seed News and Gubba Frozen News and emailers Gubba Seed e-News and Gubba Frozen e-News  with a readership of over 16000 all put together.

Finally, where do you see the Gubba Group going from here?

We see Gubba Cold Storage to be a 1000 cr company by 2025 serving the Indian Agri and food industries.A name that is synonymous with ‘Preservation’.
